Arranging Tools

What Are These?

I started out arranging by ear, painstakingly multi-tracking what was in my head. Slowly recording part by part, to work out which chords and notes I needed where.

I would have given anything to have some ear-based tools to help me fill in those tricky gaps or assist navigating key changes without any formal music theory education in my background.

The following tools I've designed to help new arrangers (or arrangers like me, who predominantly arrange by "hearing it") continue on their journey, hopefully assisting them to dodge some of their own arranging road blocks along the way.

Will These Solve Every Problem?

Nope! There are countless ways to approach a key change or navigate a tricky melody note, and experienced arrangers will each have their own preferences and instincts.

These tools are built around the harmonic framework in Arranging Barbershop by The Barbershop Harmony Society, and are deliberately geared towards the barbershop style. If you're new to arranging (especially arranging by ear) they're a useful starting point for building your harmonic vocabulary and getting unstuck when a chord just isn't sitting right.
